What are chemical peels and how do they work?
Chemical peels use a chemical solution to improve and smooth the texture of the skin by loosening dead cells from the skin’s surface, revealing new, healthy cells. There are four levels of peels: very superficial, superficial, medium, and deep. These peels can be matched to your skin type and desired outcome. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), and trichloroacetic acid (TCA) are used for this purpose. The precise formula used may be adjusted to meet each patient's needs.

What do they treat?

Chemical peels:
  • Help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Smooth out rough skin texture and sun damage
  • Fade brown spots
  • Assist in the clearing of acne/blemished skin.

Detoxifying peels:

  • Go deeper to remove toxins and bring oxygen to the skin
  • Treat damage caused by smoking or exposure to second-hand smoke

What is the usual course of treatment?
Skin is cleansed and the chemical peel is applied to the skin. Different peels can be applied to different parts of the face. The process takes about 30 minutes. Patients should wait overnight to wash their face following treatment.

What kind of results will I see?
Chemical peels give you smooth, radiant, glowing skin and rid the skin of bacteria. Results last around four weeks.

How does the treatment feel?
The level of discomfort experienced depends on the treatment. Most peels are gentle and create little or no burning or stinging sensation to the skin. Dramatic wrinkling, sun damage or acne scars may require a deeper peel, which may cause moderate stinging for a few minutes. Patients may experience temporary throbbing, mild tingling, swelling or redness. Patients may or may not see flaking and/or peeling around 2-3 days following a treatment. Peel patients must wait 48 hours after treatment to exercise and should use sunscreen protection every day.

Who is suitable for chemical peels?
Chemical peels can be tailored to the needs of most skin types, including those with sensitive skin. Chemical peels are not safe for pregnant or lactating women. We recommend one of our specialty facials as an alternative for expectant or nursing mothers.
