What is Photodynamic Therapy/Blue Light and how does it work?
The Levulan Photodynamic Therapy System is a two-part process that utilizes both Levulan Kerastick topical solution and Blue Light treatment. The Kerastick contains ALA – a naturally occurring substance in the body – which is painted over the face. The Blue Light Treatment emits a safe, cool, visible blue light which activates the ALA to wipe out abnormal cells. This procedure can be added to a Galaxy Fotofacial program to improve results.
What does it treat?
Photodynamic Therapy/Blue Light is an effective treatment for:

What is the usual course of treatment?
The first step is to have a Levulan® Kerastick® topical solution applied to the skin. This solution makes the treated areas more sensitive to light, which prepares the skin for the second step in the process. After leaving the topical solution on the skin for 45-60 minutes, therapy continues with a Blue Light Treatment. A Blue Light Treatment session lasts 4-8 minutes.
The ALA makes the skin extremely sun-sensitive, so patients are advised to stay out of the sun for 24 hours following treatment.
For best results 1 to 3 treatments are required, depending on the condition. Results last three years. After the initial treatments, you will need maintenance once a year. Regular microdermabrasion or chemical peels after treatment will enhance the effects.
What kind of results will I see?
Photodynamic Therapy/Blue Light clears up acne and pre-cancerous cells. It also reduces signs of aging, such as fine lines and brown spots.
How does Photodynamic Therapy/Blue Light feel?
The Blue Light treatment can cause minimal discomfort because of the nature of the Levulan® Kerastick® topical solution. This discomfort usually improves immediately after treatment and ends within 24 hours. After treatment is completed, almost all patients experience some temporary reddening and some patients experience minimal swelling. Generally all reddening disappears by 4 weeks after treatment and swelling disappears after 1-2 days.
