What is Restylane and how does it work?
Restylane is a safe and natural cosmetic dermal filler that restores volume and fullness to lips or to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Approved by the FDA in 2003, Restylane is made of non-animal-based hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that already exists in the human body. Restylane lasts longer, adds more volume, and causes fewer reactions than other types of fillers used in the past such as human or bovine collagen.

For wrinkles, when the Restylane is injected, it procedures natural volume under the wrinkle, which lifts it up and smooths it out. For facial contours, the Restylane corrects deep folds and lifts up the skin from cheeks and chin. This provides a fuller shape for the chin or a rounder, more sensual line along the cheeks.

When using Restylane for lip augmentation, the gel is injected into the inside of the upper or lower lip. It is also injected along the lip line. Not only will this help bring about a more youthful look, it can also help prevent lipstick from bleeding into the small lines around the lips.

What does it treat?
Restylane can be used to:
  • Shape facial contours
  • Smooth wrinkles
  • Sculpt lips

What is the usual course of treatment?
After identifying the areas to be treated, Thomas K. Carlson, M.D. injects very small amounts of Restylane (hyaluronic acid) into the skin with a very fine needle. Receiving Restylane injections can take anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour depending on the area treated. Before receiving Restylane injections patients should avoid using aspirin, Vitamin E supplements and other medications as they can increase bruising or bleeding. No sedation or local anesthetic is required and you will be able to drive and engage in all of your usual daily activities immediately after your injections.

What kind of results will I see?
Restylane produces immediate and long-lasting wrinkle correction and lip plumping, resulting in a healthy, more youthful, and fuller appearance. Effects last 4-8 months or longer. Treatments are normally scheduled twice a year. Evidence shows that having a touch up treatment before the product has fully dissipated will enhance the lasting effect.

How does Restylane feel?
Because the needle is so fine and only a small amount of liquid is used, the pain associated with Restylane injections is minimal. After your treatment, you might have some redness or swelling. This will normally last less than a week. Sunbathing and cold outdoor activities should be avoided until any redness or swelling disappear.

Who is suitable for Restylane?
Restylane is an effective treatment for those with visible wrinkles or folds or who desire fuller lips. Restylane should not be used by women who are pregnant or nursing.
