What is Botox and how does it work?
Botox is a prescription treatment approved by the FDA in 2002 for immediate and long-lasting reduction of moderate to severe dynamic wrinkles in the face. Dynamic wrinkles are the lines that develop in one’s face over time due to aging or overuse of facial muscles. The doctor administers a safe form of the botulinum toxin through small injections. The injections work by temporarily weakening these tiny facial muscles very precisely, smoothing visible lines. After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled while untreated facial muscles contract normally, allowing a patient’s facial expression to be unaffected. The procedure is a safe, fast, and popular alternative to the surgical forehead lift.

What does it treat?
Botox is used to improve the appearance of:
  • Worry lines
  • Frown lines
  • Laugh lines
  • Crows feet
  • Forehead wrinkles

What is the usual course of treatment?
After identifying the areas to be treated, Thomas K. Carlson, M.D. injects a very small amount of Botox (botulinum toxin type A) with a very fine needle into several locations. No sedation or local anesthetic is required and you will be able to drive and engage in all of your usual daily activities immediately after your injections. We do ask that you remain upright for 4 hours after treatment.

What kind of results will I see?
Botox patients will see a noticeable reduction in the appearance of lines and wrinkles in treated areas. The effects of Botox begin to appear 2 to 3 days after the injections and last an average of 6-12 months. Repeat injections are done as the muscle function returns. Over time, the muscles begin to lose their strength and the time intervals between injections lengthen.

How does Botox feel?
Because the needle is so fine and only a small amount of liquid is used, the pain associated with the injections is minimal. You may have slight temporary bruising of the skin at your injection sites, but otherwise there will be no visible signs of your treatment. Botox is a simple and safe procedure with minimal side effects.

Who is suitable for Botox?
Botox is an effective wrinkle reducer for anyone with visible dynamic
wrinkles in their face.
